In what has been an unprecedented and challenging year for the sector, we will explore how we can help students overcome personal challenges through developing resilience, adaptability and proactiveness to command their own success. Our experienced guest panel will examine the conditions and practices that can help students develop these skills in what is now a very changed approach to delivery (remote/blended learning). We hope to make the session as engaging as possible with lots of opportunity for Q&A.

Most suitable for: Professionals in student experience roles and academics with teaching and learning responsibilities.

Guest Panel

Paula Shaw – Academic Lead (HE Innovate) and Associate Professor in Online Teaching and Learning – University of Derby

Following the unprecedented disruption of exams, created by Covid-19, students entering Higher Education are feeling more vulnerable than ever. Paula Shaw introduces the session with reflections on her own educational experiences of setbacks, resilience and a leap of faith. Drawing on contemporary literature she sets the scene for creating a positive psychological welcome for all students, and makes recommendations that academics can follow to enhance students’ sense of belonging.

Emma Sue Prince – Director of Unimenta and author of “7 Skills for the Future

Emma Sue Prince is a specialist in experiential learning and believes 100% that this methodology is key to developing life skills and soft skills as it is the only way to develop self-awareness, upon which all behavioural change is based. Emma Sue is author of 7 Skills for the Future, published by Pearson Business in 2019. Emma Sue, is also the Lead Author for our recently published Online Learning Units, which are high quality interactive online courses in ‘Transitioning into HE’, ‘How to learn online’ and ‘Wellbeing’ which we are currently offering for free for this academic year to all UK and Irish HE institutions.
